It was a whim response to a “would you consider helping us raise money for Muscular Dystrophy” . Not really knowing about the disease and just hearing a free lunch was involved i said yes.
Lock-up is when they, an organization, picks you up from work at noon and delivers you to a place to raise money by phone calling family and friends. This includes lunch this time at a sports bar,bit of irony here. So on September 18, 2014 I will be taken away.
Not really knowing about MD (muscular dystrophy) i set out to explore with Google.
The Mayo Clinic writes:
“Muscular dystrophy is a group of genetic diseases in which muscle fibers are unusually susceptible to damage. These damaged muscles become progressively weaker. Most people who have muscular dystrophy will eventually need to use a wheelchair.
There are many different kinds of muscular dystrophy. Symptoms of the most common variety begin in childhood, primarily in boys. Other types of muscular dystrophy don’t surface until adulthood.
People who have muscular dystrophy may have trouble breathing or swallowing.
While there is no cure for muscular dystrophy, medications and therapy can slow the course of the disease.”
I know about muscle atrophy. being 58, i understand too well, if i don’t use a muscle i loose the major use of the muscle from declining muscle tissue. Muscle Dystophy is a disease that deteriorates the muscle tissue.
I have been going to the gym allot since my 40s knowing that I am not as active in work as i used to be. My back hurts if i don’t exercise I am weaker and grown more. I have learned to build muscle at an older age. I have made doable hurdles to go over, such as biking 50 miles on a rail to trail, doing an Insanity Workout, blasting out un-assisted pull ups, and so on.
Non of this would have been doable if I had MD. I cant go to the gym now with out feeling blessed and longing to help others with MD.
So I am writing this to inform you and ask for your support. My personal goal is to raise 3000 by sept 18. if you can help please do so and thank-you. http://www2.mda.org/goto/Joel-DeBernardo copy and paste to get to my donation page.
Money goes to family support groups, research, camps, physical support
Think of this next time you do pushups and yoga thanks
